Consulting Arborist (Level 5 AQF Arboriculture)

We provide high-level Arboricultural Assessment reports and plans for Development Applications, Construction Certification and on-site advice on tree protection and management during demolition and construction.

“We believe the best way to resolve tree issues is through working closely with the design team to understand the design intent and clients’ needs, to be able to provide the best, economical, design resolution to the tree issues.”

At what stage should I appoint a Consulting Arborist?

Engaging a Consulting Arborist should be considered from the initial concept design phase. As part of a Development Application, the Council will require information about the existing site conditions, which includes a detailed record of the trees within the site and in close proximity of the proposal.

This information can also inform and influence the design of the building and landscape, by identifying the best trees to retain, (including any neighbouring trees or street trees which are outside of the property boundary which might be affected), and highlight those trees considered low value or known to be a "weed species".

If you would like to find out more, give us a call, we would be happy to have a chat about your trees.

What does a Consulting Arborist do?

An Arboricultural Consultant is a person who is AQF Level 5 qualified in Diploma of Arboriculture and has extensive knowledge and experience in the assessment and diagnosis of trees, often in association with a Development Application.

Through working closely with the design team, at EDS our Consulting Arborist will provide guidance on the parameters to minimise the impact on the existing trees identified to be retained and provide clear and appropriate guidelines on the protection measures that will be required during the construction phase.

These protection measures are to be retained, in place, throughout the build of the project.

Preliminary Tree Assessment

This is a detailed record of the existing tree species and a site plan with the location of the trees within the development site. It provides information on the health, structure, life expectancy and the retention value of each tree.

This information is related in to a clear set of preliminary tree assessment plans which can help inform the design team in early design phase of a new project, by identifying which trees should be retained and protected as part of the development proposal, and which trees are considered low value or should be removed, regardless, due to a structural defect.

This is extremely important when the landscape design needs to work seamlessly around your existing trees.
Arboricultural Impact Assessment
As part of a Development Application, the Council will require information about the changes to the site, which includes a detailed record of the trees within, or just outside the site and what will be impacted or removed.

An Arboricultural Impact Assessment (AIA) report clearly outlines the trees to be retained and protected in accordance with best practice outlined in:

AS4970-2009 - Protection of Trees on Development Sites.

The AIA report will also outline and discuss the reasons why a tree is to be removed as part of the Development Application.

At the same time we recommend appointing EDS to create the landscape designs if this is also required as part of  your DA. This enable a more streamlined and coordinated design process.

Onsite Arboricultural Inspections & Compliance Certification

As part of the construction process, Council will often require you to engage a Project Arborist to carry out site inspections at key times throughout the construction phase as identified in the Conditions of Consent.

At EDS our Consulting Arborists' will review onsite progress works and issue certification providing the tree protection measures are compliant and in place throughout the construction phase, for the future health and longevity of the tree.

We will also over see any construction work within the Tree Protection Zone (TPZ) and will provide guidance and Certification in regards the protection and construction method, whilst working around the roots and canopy of a tree.
